The Lesson Plans are organized under the following strands and substrands:
- 1.0 Numbers
- 1.1–1.2 Reading number symbols up to 100 and representing numbers using concrete objects (bundling tens and ones)
- 1.3 Whole numbers – Counting in 10s up to 100 forward and backward using number lines and hundred charts
- 1.4 Reading and writing number symbols up to 100, creating mini number posters
- 1.5 Place value of numbers – Identifying Tens (T) and Ones (O) using place value charts and an abacus
- 1.6 Reading and writing numbers up to 20 in words (spelling one to twenty)
- 1.7 Number patterns up to 100 – Working out missing numbers in steps of 2s
- 1.8–1.9 Addition – Adding 2-digit numbers vertically up to a sum of 100 without and with regrouping (carrying 1 ten)
- 1.10 Number patterns involving addition up to 100
- 1.11–1.13 Subtraction – Subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping (unbundling 1 ten into 10 ones) horizontally and vertically
- 1.14 Number patterns involving subtraction (decreasing sequences) up to 100
- 1.15–1.16 Multiplication – Multiplying single-digit numbers by 10 using repeated addition and fast multiplication rules
- 1.17 Division – Dividing quantities up to 25 by 2, 3, 4, and 5 without remainders as equal sharing
- 1.18–1.22 Fractions – Identifying, drawing, and colouring a half (1/2) and a quarter (1/4) of a whole shape, fraction puzzles, and making a half from two quarters
- 2.0 Measurement
- 2.1–2.2 Length – Fabricating and using 1-metre sticks and 1-metre strings to measure classroom perimeters and furniture
- 2.3–2.4 Mass – Measuring mass in kilograms (kg) using balance scales, standard 1-kg masses, and 1-kg sandbags (heavier, equal, lighter)
- 2.5–2.6 Capacity – Measuring liquid capacity in litres (L) using 1-litre bottles through filling and emptying games
- 2.7–2.8 Time – Reading and telling time by the hour on digital clocks (e.g., 8:00) and analogue clocks (short hour hand and long minute hand at 12)
- 2.9–2.10 Money – Adding Kenyan currency denominations up to sh. 100; classroom model shop role-play (buying and selling up to 3 items)
- 3.0 Geometry
- 3.1 Lines – Drawing straight lines using rulers and curved lines using flexible ropes, clay, and plasticine
- 3.2–3.3 Shapes – Identifying 2D shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles, ovals, squares) and making repeating geometric border patterns
Key mathematical skills and practical learning experiences covered across the lessons include:
- Number Mastery and Operations: Grouping counters into bundles of tens, reading and spelling number words up to 20, executing vertical two-digit addition and subtraction with place value regrouping (carrying and borrowing), and solving growing and decreasing number patterns.
- Multiplication, Division, and Fractions: Linking repeated addition of tens to multiplication, sharing counters equally into groups without remainders, folding paper shapes into halves and quarters, and demonstrating that two quarters equal one half.
- Standard Measurement: Marking 1-metre wooden sticks to measure room dimensions, balancing packages against 1-kg masses, measuring bucket capacity with 1-litre cans, telling exact “o’clock” times on analogue and digital clocks, and adding currency amounts up to sh. 100 in model shop transactions.
- Geometry and Design: Using straight edges to draw clean lines, shaping bendable pipes into curves, and arranging cut-out geometric shapes into alternating decorative patterns.
